LAHORE: Ten people, including six children and three women, died in rain-related accidents in Lahore and Sialkot late on Saturday and early Sunday, police and Rescue-1122 said.
Five children and a woman were killed when the roof of a house collapsed in the downpour in Gujjarpura village of Sialkot. The house was owned by Wali Muhammad, a labourer. The children were between six months and 10 years of age.
Witnesses said that rescue teams were late in arriving at the site of the accident.

Five people were buried under the debris when the roof of a house collapsed in Kot Khwaja Saeed area of the provincial capital on Saturday night.
Rescue officials pulled the injured out of the debris and took them to a hospital where an 80-year-old woman and her five-year-old grandson died.
In Do Moria Pul area, a man, identified as Arshad, died and his wife was seriously injured when the roof of their house caved in.
Rescue-1122 said the houses in Kot Khwaja Saeed and Do Moria Pul were in a dilapidated condition.
A man, Ghafoor, was electrocuted in Kot Abdul Malik.
Three people were injured after a tree fell on a car and a motorcycle near Jinnah Hospital. The vehicles were severely damaged.
The Met Office said that a monsoon trough was likely to develop in the few days that would activate monsoon progression. This would bring monsoon in the country in the first week of July, it said.
The first spell of monsoon rains is expected in the upper parts of the country. Scattered rain/thundershowers are expected in Islamabad, upper Punjab (Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha and Lahore divisions), upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar and Kohat divisions) and Kashmir between Tuesday and Thursday.

Seven die, 10 injured in two road accident,
KOT MOMIN / TALAGANG:
Seven people were killed and 10 others were injured in two accidents on Saturday.
Rescue 1122 officials said a van travelling to Chakwal from Talagang and a car driving in from the opposite direction collided at Gambhir drain bridge.
Rescue officials said soon after the collision, the van caught fire.
Witnesses said some of the passengers broke the windows and jumped out of the van. Two women died in the spot.
One of them was identified as Ismat Shaheen, a resident of Wanhaar, whereas the other body was unidentified till the report was filed.
Muhammad Khan Kallo, Shahbaz Hussain, Abdullah Aziz, Nasir Mehmood and Muhammd Aslam, Noor Khan, Muhammad Javed and Muhammad Jamil were injured and taken to burn units in Wah Cantt and Kharian.
Separately, five members of a family were killed and two others were injured in an accident on the motorway.
The family was travelling to Islamabad from Lahore.
The tyre of their car burst near Kot Momin and the driver lost control.
The car hit a trolley, killing five people on the spot.
They were identified as Abdul Basit, Amir Shakoor, Samia Shakoor, Asma Basit, Arfa.
Basit and Faizan – both children – sustained minor injuries.
Rescue 1122 officials had to cut open the vehicles to pull out the bodies.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed grief over the incidents.

Tragic loss: Two, including police constable, killed in road accidents
MANSEHRA / CHARSADDA:
A police constable was killed and six other people injured in an accident on Charsadda Road on Sunday.
According to the police report, a speeding passenger van collided with an electricity pole on Charsadda Road near Charsadda Sugar Mills. As a result, police constable Pervez Khan died on the spot, while six other passengers, identified as Jan Ali, Behramand, Ahmadullah, Asim, Manan and Sakhawat were severely injured.
Residents present nearby rushed to the site and shifted the injured men to Charsadda hospital.
According to doctors, the critically injured were later referred to Lady Reading Hospital.
Mansehra accident leaves one dead
A man was killed and five others, including two women, were severely injured when a Suzuki pickup rammed into a motorcycle near Dhodial on Sunday.
Police officials quoted eyewitnesses as saying that three friends from Sheikhabad Afghan camp were travelling towards Mansehra city from Shinkiyari on a motorcycle when they collided head on with the Suzuki pickup near Baidadi village. The pickup, after hitting the bike, crashed into a tree, killing the driver instantly.
The three bike riders and two women from the pickup were injured. The deceased was identified as Israr Ahmed of Dhodial village, while the injured were Islamuddin, Naib Gul, Nazeer, Noshi Bibi and Gulnaz.

Drive carefully: Four die in two accidents
MULTAN: Four people, including two women and a child, died in two accidents in Bahawalangar on Sunday.
Muhammad Sadiq was on his motorcycle with Shehnaz Bibi and Sana Bibi on the passenger seat when a trolley hit the motorcycle, killing the women on the spot. Sadiq passed away on his way to Minchan Abad hospital. Both the women died at the spot. Sadiq died on the way to Minchan Abad tehsil headquarters hospital in Bahawalanagar district. Sadiq Ganj police said the trolley driver had fled leaving the trolley behind.
The police have seized the trolley. Separately, a five-year-old playing on the road was crushed under a tractor-trolley in Minchan Abad. The driver fled.

Competition in disguise: Traffic DIG launches campaign to reduce accidents
KARACHI:
To reduce road accidents, the Traffic police DIG Muhammad Arif Hanif has announced a competition for SSPs in all districts of Karachi to launch a traffic awareness week from April 21 to April 27.
“The victims of road accidents either lack road sense or poor knowledge of traffic rules and regulation,” said the DIG traffic on Sunday. “It is important that we take initiatives for the safety of the public,” he stressed.
During the week, camps will be set up that would be equipped with public address systems, pamphlets and guidance booklets, according to his instructions. They will also conduct seminars and deliver lectures at schools, arrange walks for a cause, visit public service bus terminals and deliver lectures to the drivers and conductors in association with their unions.
Hanif directed the officials to display banners with road safety slogans on busy thoroughfares. The officials will motivate the public to follow traffic signals and road signs, while also informing the about the consequences of violating traffic rules.
A prize distribution ceremony would be held at Saleem Vahidi Auditorium at Clifton where commendation certificates with cash rewards would be granted to the officers exhibiting excellent performance for the success of the event.

International Day for Mine Awareness: Speakers support mine risk education to avert accidents

GHALLANAI: International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action was observed at Government Degree College Ekka Ghund, Mohmand Agency on Thursday. The day is observed every year on April 4 as designated by the United Nations.
The event was organised by Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) FATA, in collaboration with its national headquarters in Islamabad and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The theme for this year was ‘Safety is the Key – it’s up to you and me.’
Along with officials from relevant departments, amputees and their families from Ambar, Pandyali and Safi tehsils also participated in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Mine Risk Education (MRE) Project Officer FATA Obaidullah said that the day is observed to help reduce the number of people who are disabled in accidents.
Mohmand Agency Assistant Political Agent Muhammad Naeem Khan attended the event as the chief guest along with officials of health and education departments, MRE project and elders of the areas where MRE activities are in progress. The agenda of the event included presentations on activities of PRCS, speeches and stories of amputees themselves.
Secretary PRCS Mohmand branch, Fauzee Khan, said their team is working on disaster preparedness, first aid trainings and emergency response required on the site of improvised explosive device (IED) blasts.
There are two agency disaster response teams (ADRT) already, whereas an emergency response team (ERT) has also been formed in the area, said Khan, adding first aid trainings were given to more than 350 levies and khasadar officials along with members of the community.
Speaking about the MRE project, Khan said the main objective of the project is to minimise injuries that occur due to explosions of landmines.
