KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — The Road Transport Department (RTD) will soon have a new section focusing on profiling drivers according to their driving behaviour which has been found to be the main cause of road accidents.
Its deputy director-general Datuk Yusoff Ayob said this was part of the plans to reduce road mishaps in hilly areas such as Genting Highlands.
The transport ministry held a special meeting to discuss the setting up of the section in November last year, following the bus accident at Km3.5 of the Kuala Lumpur-Genting Highlands road which killed 37 people on August 8.
Besides drivers’ profiling, the section will initiate strategic placement of RTD and Puspakom personnel to facilitate physical and technical inspections on buses as well as stricter enforcement on bus drivers to ensure appropriate fitness level and zero drugs and alcohol influence.
Yusoff said there would also be a revamp of driving schools’ instructional curriculum, to take effect within the next three months.
“It should have been launched in April, but there were several details to be finalised and there were technical setbacks with the module printing processes,” Yusoff told a press conference at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman yesterday.
Bukit Aman traffic chief SAC Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff said no fatal accidents were recorded in the vicinity of Genting Highlands from February to April, which was the period of an integrated operation every year.
“There was only one minor accident during the operation, bringing together the efforts of police, RTD, Public and Land Transport Commission (SPAD), Puspakom, Department of Environment and the National Anti-Drugs Agency,” he said.
Mohd Fuad said the joint operation would monitor bus condition and the drivers to be up to mark at all times.
This year, 2,668 summonses were issued, with 1,957 of them related to improper number plates.
“A total of 44 out of 439 individuals checked were tested positive for drugs, while three were found to have arrest warrants issued on their names for previous traffic offences.”
He said Puspakom checked 965 vehicles, while SPAD issued notices to 147 drivers during the three-month operation.
Operation firecracker aims to reduce drunk driving accidents

If you're planning on traveling this holiday weekend, State Highway Patrol officers want to make sure you do so safely and sober.
Operation Firecracker kicked off on June 28th and will run until July 6th. The purpose of the operation is to increase the number of checkpoints in order to reduce the number of deaths and injuries stemming from drunk driving accidents.
Trooper Brian Allen says this time of year seems to be particularly dangerous out on the roadways.
"Last year during the summer months, the highway patrol alone investigated 55 fatal collisions and 838 collisions involving injury due to drinking and driving," Trooper Allen said. "So that's what we're all out here, this campaign trying to prevent."
Trooper Allen says checkpoints will still be in place if people begin leaving the coast in preparation for Tropical Storm Arthur.
He also asks the public to call State Highway Patrol if they see a driver who appears drunk behind the wheel.
Ambulance chiefs to hire driving instructors to reduce accidents
AMBULANCE bosses are hiring “driving instructors” to try to reduce the number of accidents.
East Midlands Ambulance Service vehicles, in the 12 months to April 5, were involved in 404 incidents that cost £400,000 – though this was down from 462 the year previously.
Many accidents were caused by leaving the handbrake off. Others incidents included clipping mirrors, hitting parked cars and reversing incorrectly.
Staff often drive in high-risk situations and accidents are not always their fault
Nicky Fothergill, EMAS
EMAS drivers will have tuition not only to cut collision rates but also the repair bill.
Nicky Fothergill, in charge of driving at EMAS, said: “Staff often drive in high-risk situations and accidents are not always their fault.
“But there are things we can do. One is spotting problems, such as making sure drivers are reversing properly."
Teenage Driver Crash Statistics
The relationship between age and driving behavior has interested highway safety researchers and administrators for many years. It is generally acknowledged that the greatest risk of traffic crashes is among teenage drivers. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers across the United States. For both men and women, drivers aged 16 to 19 years of age have the highest average annual crash and traffic violation rates of any other age group.
