Six killed in accident, protests in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jul 16 : Six persons were killed and two injured in a head-on collision between an army vehicle and a civilian cab on the Srinagar-Baramulla road in the outskirts of the city today, triggering protests by locals. The collision took place between a recovery crane of the army and the cab, which was on its way to Baramulla district, at Shalteng, resulting in on-the-spot death of three cab passengers and injuries to five others, a police spokesman said.
He said the injured were rushed to hospital, where three of them died. The accident led to protests from local residents and passersby who pelted stones at the army vehicle and also tried to set it ablaze. Security forces in the area used batons and fired tear smoke shells to chase away the protesters, the spokesman said, adding that the army vehicle has been seized and the driver arrested.
A case has been registered and investigation started, the spokesman said.

10.30pm update: Traffic: Lorry crash closes M5 between Bridgwater and Taunton in Somerset

LATEST: 9.45am: Avon and Somerset Police have stated: "We’re expecting work to get under way shortly to recover one of the lorries involved in a collision on the M5 this morning.
"Two articulated lorries were in collision between junctions 24 at Bridgwater and 25 at Taunton on the southbound carriageway at just before 3am.
"The driver of one of the lorries, who is in his fifties, has been taken to Musgove Park Hospital. He has serious arm injuries and is undergoing treatment.
"Ch Insp Rhys Hughes said: “One of the lorries tipped over onto its side during the collision blocking all three lanes.
“While work to recover the vehicle is due to get under way shortly we’re unable to give a time estimate of how long this will take and the motorway will remain closed for some time.
“I appreciate the closure will have caused problems for commuters this morning and I thank the public for their continued patience while we deal with this incident.”
Diversions remain in place from junction 24 and we continue to advise motorists to seek alternative routes and avoid the area wherever possible.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the M5 in Somerset which could be closed until as late as 3pm this afternoon after a crash between two lorries.
Drivers are being advised of major delays following an incident overnight involving two HGVs.
Police were called to the scene between junctions 24 and 25 at around 2.55am this morning following two lorries colliding on the southbound carriageway of the M5.
Officers found the two artic lorries were obstructing all three lanes.
One lorry is owned by Royal Mail and the other was carrying paper, say police.
Initially one of the drivers was trapped inside his cab but is now out and has been taken to Musgrove Park Hospital.
The extent of the man's injuries is unknown at this time. It is thought the driver of the second lorry has sustained minor injuries at this stage.
Now the motorway is closed southbound between junction 24 (at Bridgwater) and 25 (for Taunton), with traffic backing up to junction 23, while Avon and Somerset Police investigate the causes of the incident.
Devon and Somerset Fire Service say it could be closed until as late as 3pm.
The Highways Agency is working alongside the police and other emergency services to keep traffic flowing in the meantime.
Traffic is being diverted between the two junctions via the A38, which runs alongside the motorway.
"Delays of 15 minutes over normal journey times are being reported this morning, but these are expected to grow as the morning peak period gets underway," said a statement from Avon and Somerset Police.
"Drivers should check the latest conditions before setting out on a journey, and should seek to avoid this section of the M5 if possible."

Srinagar: After the death of four persons in an accident between Tavera and Army’s recovery van at Lawaypora inSrinagar, the chaos continuously prevail with hundreds of private and passenger vehicles stranded on the road. The deadly accident prompted strong protests from locals against the army.
Hundreds of police, paramilitary and army men have been deployed in the area to control the situation. Reportedly the army vehicle has also been torched by the angry mob.
Meanwhile, the police spokesman said the situation has returned to normal.
